Information about Emigrants registered in Swedish church books:

The database contains emigrants registered in the Swedish church records and comprises over 2 300 parishes throughout the country. As of January 20th 2010 the number of entries amount to 1 137 044. This represents approximately a little more than ¾ of all Swedish emigrants.

The information in gathered from the Swedish Church record volumes over migration records, household examination rolls, and the Rote archives for parts of Stockholm. Additionally, there is information from other sources and links to different archives, such as Swedish-American church books and various newspaper articles. The time period of 1836 - 1895 has been systematically examined for all counties except Uppsala, Norrbotten and Stockholm. Since there has been no systematic review of the material for these counties, you will find varying amounts of information. In many counties material dated after 1895 is present and others are currently being registered, as can be seen below.

The database has been constructed as part of various Swedish projects over the past 20 years. The Swedish Emigrant Institute in Växjö was leading the national coordination of the project and finalized the release of a market product. The material had previously been available in CD format under the name "Emibas". Much of the material found in the database is from this CD, but has since been updated and many new registration projects are underway. The ambition is to build and maintain a database of material for all of Sweden.

Active registration projects:

Norrbotten county is being registered by "Historiekällar'n" in Edsbyn directly into EmiWeb. The Värmland county registration of material dated after 1895 is being complemented and registered up to the Swedish documentation secrecy limit by The Swedish American Center in Karlstad.

More specific information regarding some of the registration projects follows below:

Gävleborg county

The construction of the database was commenced in 1995 and finished in 2000. Emigrants and immigrants were registered simultaneously. Started as a labour market project in the municipality of Ovanåker, it continued as an EU-project until its completion in 2000.

The source material came from church records (household examination rolls and moving records) on microfiche cards. The Swedish Emigrant Institute in Växjö borrowed the cards during this time and returned them in 2001, when the database had been completed after which a full set of microfiche cards was bought from SVAR.

Some parish material has been revised and complemented in co-operation with local projects, organisations and private researchers from Färila, Hille, Järbo, Järvsö, Ljusdal and Ockelbo, to name a few locations. The databases have also been complemented with destination information from CD-EMIGRANTEN and Bishop Hill Settlers. The period spans between 1840 and 1920 depending on the church books.

Geographically, the database encompasses all of Gävlebog county, including the Hälsingland and the Gästrikland areas.

Orust

The material has been compiled in study circle project between 1997 and 2005, and includes emigrants from the parishes of: Torp, Myckleby, Långelanda, Röra, Stala, Tegneby, Morlanda and Mollösund. Information is missing from parishes Gullholmen, Käringön and parts of Skaftö parish that previously belonged to Morlanda parish. The first emigrants are from the 1790s and the last we have registered are from the beginning of the 1930s. Approximately 1700 people emigrated from Orust. Some of which moved, some disappeared or escaped from boats they were enlisted on. The database also contains people who have requested a moving certificate from Orust. Emigrants born in Orust who requested a moving certificate from Gothenburg are found in their database. There may be incorrect information present. We are thankful for corrections regarding such emigrants.

Värmland county

The material from Värmland is taken from the Värmland church records, moving records and household examination rolls, as well as from Kinship Center’s archives. These archives include emigrant listings (derived from the church records) and information that has been provided in a variety of ways over the years.

Alla parishes that are or have been part of Värmland are included, such as Södra Råda (presently Skaraborg county), Karlskoga (presently Örebro county), etc. Emigration to all countries is included. The time span for the church records registration material begins with the household examination records that include 1840 up to around 1895. The time period for registration from the emigrant listings varies greatly from parish to parish. Many go all the way up to 1930, and some even farther. This explains the variance in information between parishes.

Approximately 126 000 registered emigrants

Örebro county

The registration of Örebro emigrants was first started by the Örebro Emigrant registry in the 1980s and was expanded in the 1990’s, in a co-operation between the regional archives of Örebro and the organisation Örebro genealogists. The result was an Emigrant register for the county of Örebro available at the regional archives in Örebro.

The registered time period is 1840-1930. Emigration to all countries has been registered. People mentioned as “staying in America” in the church records have also been included.

Alla parishes that are or have been part of Örebro are included, such as Götlunda (presently Västmanland county), The Värmland part of Nysund (presently Värmland), Tived (presently Örebro), Finneröjda (presently Örebro). The exception is Bjurtjärn, (presently Värmland) that is not part of our archives.

The register includes approximately 49 000 emigrants.

New information and new material is continually added as attachments. Every week, we receive new material in the form of letters, photos, biographical stories, newspaper articles and contact information to relations in America, etc. Complementary registration is done when emigrants are found in other databases, such as probation records, Swedish-American church records, Swedish-American magazines, passenger listings, etc.
